“Connect with the sun so it illuminates healthy skin and a natural glow from within.” – Kerlyne
Whether it’s the after effects of the polar vortex or simply just a stroke of fate, this has been one of the most gorgeous NYC summers ever. We’ve been enjoying our lunches down by the Hudson River Park here in Tribeca and drooling over the yachts passing by. Labor Day is upon us, so get outside and enjoy the outdoors while you can!
While over-exposure can be damaging, daily sun is healthy in order to produce Vitamin D and reap its benefits. Michael F. Holick, author of THE UV ADVANTAGE and the head of the Vitamin D Research Lab, believes the optimal level for preventing disease is around 1000 IU.
It’s quite easy to get that exposure in the summer, so be smart about it!
Keep your summer tan glowing now and into the fall with these tips for healthy color and sun.
1. Avoid the midday sun between 10 am and 3 pm. At this point UV radiation is at its peak. Make use of beach shades, umbrellas, and hats.
2. Rinse off with fresh water after time in the ocean or pools. The salt in the ocean and chlorine from pools can be drying and irritating to the skin.
3. After sun products can really help repair and heal the skin. We love Dermalogica After Sun Repair for its cooling qualities and Khushi Healing Balm for its nourishing oils and soothing herbs. The sun can be dehydrating, so be sure to moisturize and of course, hydrate!
3. Get a spray tan. With just a few mists, you can get a gorgeous glow without the cellular damage. Our highly trained team here at Euphoria Spa will leave you with a perfectly even and lasting glow. Check out our write ups in Allure and New York Magazine.
4. Apply sunscreen liberally but know your product. Mineral sunscreens provide a physical barrier while chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays. Higher SPF’s only offer marginally more protection. Since chemical sunscreens can contain higher amounts of potentially damaging chemicals, it’s wise to do your skin a favor and do your research. Check out EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database for information about each sunscreen on the market.
5. Protect your skin from the inside out. The potent anti-inflammatories in Omega 3′s help to protect skin while antioxidant rich foods help combat the free radical damage caused by UV rays.
6. Cut back on sugar intake. Sugar increases inflammation in the body, making your skin more prone to sunburn. Keep the sugar to a minimum; your skin and waist will thank you!
